Lucas-Nülle Lehr- und Messgeräte GmbH: Teacher Student Measuring Station

 

Lucas-Nülle GmbH is a globally leading manufacturer of teaching devices and training systems for technical professional training and further training. For car mechatronics training, Lucas-Nülle charged FG-ELEKTRONIK with development and production of a teacher-student measuring station interface. This measuring station system permits real-time transfer of measured signals fed in on the teacher station to any number of student stations. Since the high voltages, e.g. in case of ignition coil impulses (> 400 V) and the indefinable line lengths do not permit efficient analogue signal transfer, we went for digital data transfer after cooperation with Lucas-Nülle. The original signal is digitised at the teacher measuring station and transferred to the first student measuring station via a standard-CAT cable. There, it is converted to an analogue value that the student can watch on the oscilloscope at the same time as the teacher and the other students. At the same time, the signalis sent on to the subsequent student measuring station (daisy chain).

The special challenge in this system is in the high input voltages of up to +/- 500 V, as well as the high resolution of the signals to be transferred, and thus the high necessary transfer bandwidth. The system has the following features:

  • Six channels in parallel, two of them on a wide band with a sampling rate of 4 MHz, four narrow-band ones 250 KHz, 10 bit resolution
  • One channel each per bandwidth at the teacher measuring station with an input voltage range of +/- 500 V, all other channels at +/- 15 V, output voltage range at the student stations generally +/-15 V
  • Digital signal processing in the FPGA
  • Overall bandwidth of the data transfer: 2 x 50 Mbit/s per twisted pair unidirectional
  • Physical layer: Ethernet, all other protocol levels proprietary
  • An additional channel for the galvanically isolated transfer of a CAN bus signal
  • RS232-return channel for status monitoring

Since the teacher-student measuring station system has technically highly interesting unique features, it is now also to be used for training and further training of other electronics professions.
