PHYWE Systeme GmbH & Co. KG is a globally leading company in the market segment of natural-sciencetraining, teaching and research. PHYWE develops and produces teaching and learning material in the areas of physics, chemistry, biology and applied sciences. FG-ELEKTRONIK developed the power supply system for the new, trendsetting PHYWE XR 4.0 x-ray device, which is able to map all the relevant subjects of x-ray physics.
This system essentially comprises a voltage-controlled inverter and a heating-current source for the x-ray tube. Both assemblies are integrated in a compact setup that was adjusted in its geometry to the installation space available. The inverter generates an output voltage from 0 to 40,000 V from a direct voltage of 24 V at a maximum current of 1 mA, using a high-voltage transformer and cascade. The target value indication is provided by a proportional integral controller. The beam current is controlled by adjusting the heating current. Both systems interlock and enable highly precise map-controlled setting of the x-ray source output.
The x-ray device corresponds to the latest regulation on the operation of x-ray devices in schools and universities and the German Irradiation Ordinance (Deutsche Strahlenverordnung). This is not the least reason for one development focus being design and implementation of an acceptable safety concept. Both the beam current and high voltage are subject to redundant monitoring and the x-ray device is switched off at once when overvoltage or too high a beam current occurs. The power supply system therefore meets the highest demands regarding operational safety and reliability.
